1. Lee Fields – Just Can’t Win

Sixty-Three year old soul singer Lee Fields released his 3rd album for Truth and Soul Recordings in June – Emma Jean. Once again Lee has team up with The Expressions a band of talented musicians that have provided backing for the likes of Aloe Blacc and Sharon Jones to name just two.

Lee is the real deal, having released his first album back in 1969 and he hasn’t stopped making music since.

3. Renegades of Jazz – Soul Boogie

Soul Boogie is definitely one for the B-Boys. Familiar samples (Sugar Pie De Santo anyone?) backed up with those B-Boy breaks makes a fire cracker of a party starter.

Record Label: Rawkingcuts // Release Date: 13 April 2014

4. Peshay – Generation

Veteran Drum n Bass DJ Peshay brings us his debut LP for Tru Thoughts. Fans of Peshay’s drum n bass output might be somewhat surprised about the funk-fuelled direction this new material has taken.

Generation is a bass and hammond-led tune filled with hooks and breaks that demand your attention. This is definitely one for the B-Boys and if you aren’t tapping your foot or nodding your head … then you must be dead!

Record Label: Tru Thoughts // Release Date: 31 March 2014

5. The Haggis Horns – Traveller Part 2 (2014 Version)

First Word Recordings have been going for 10 years and to celebrate they have released a compilation CD, “FW is 10! Celebrating Ten years of First Word Records”. The CD showcases the best of the label’s back catalogue.

The pick of the bunch for me has got to be this epic 9 minute offering from UK Funk outfit The Haggis Horns. It’s a re-work of The Traveller from their debut LP, Hot Damn!, released back in 2007.

Record Label: First Word // Release Date: 30 June 2014

6. Cookin on 3 Burners ft Daniel Merryweather – Losin Streak

In the first edition of New Music we brought you the first single from the new Cookin on 3 Burners LP. Featuring the wonderful Kylie Auldist on vocals. But we simply couldn’t resist in bringing you the flipside to that single. Losin Streak features Daniel Merryweather on vocals and it’s a …. It’s been a long time coming, and we’re super excited that Cookin on 3 Burners are back, and boy are they back. Make sure you check out the new LP – it’s a ripper!

7. Alexia Coley – Beautiful Waste of Time

Every once in a while a singer comes along who blows you away … Alexia Coley is one of those singers. With a background as a big band jazz singer and having fronted a number of bands. It’s about time Alexia received the acclaim she surely deserves. Beautiful Waste of Time has a northern soul feel with with elements of jazz and is the epitome of cool. Make sure you check out Alexia’s forthcoming LP on Jalapeno Records.

A Love Divine is taken from their 2nd album, Nose Dive on Melbourne’s very own Northside Records.

Record Label: Northside Records // Release Date: 11 April 2014

11. The Putbacks – In The Dirt

Available as a free digital download when you purchase the 7″ vinyl of The Putbacks ft Nia Palm – Spanish Harlem. The vinyl comes with a funky instrumental on the flip in the form of The Worm and of course the title track is a cover of the Aretha Franklin classic. Both tracks are worthy of your hard earned dollars. But, for what it’s worth, in my book the track that really deserves attention is the free download of In The Dirt.

Record Label: Hope Street Recordings // Release Date: 24 April 2014

12. The Impellers – The Routine

The Impellers are a 10 piece funk and soul band from Brighton in the UK. Third LP, My Certainty has just been released on Legere Recordings. Their sound is steeped in all that is funky and with a heap of sweet sweet soul.

The Routine, showcases the powerhouse vocals of lead singer Clare Witcher. The Impellers are a force to be reckoned with, and are very real contenders for one of the tightest funk bands around today.
