On Tuesday, David Mancuso founder of the infamous invite only club ‘The Loft‘ died aged 72.
Mancuso is considered something of a music legend. After renting a loft space at 647 Broadway, NYC and as a means to pay his rent he held a series of parties from 1965 to 1970. These parties proved successful and Mancuso hosted his first ‘official’ The Loft party on 14 February 1970.
David began spinning Soul, R&B and Rock then later on Disco and House music made its way into The Loft’s playlist. The Loft eventually became a weekly event running every Saturday night.
A perfectionist and audiophile, the soundsystem was impeccable, he shied away from pitch control turntables as the records were not mixed. DJ’s such as Frankie Knuckles, Francois K, David Morales and Larry Levan were all regulars at The Loft.
The Loft parties continued right up until David Mancuso’s passing, although he hasn’t DJ’d at the parties for some years now.
