There’s been some excellent mixes and playlists released for International Women’s Day this year. Here’s our pick of the best ones.
We hope that you enjoy the music and if we’ve missed any great mixes in celebration of IWD hit us up in the comments and we’ll add them.
Anne Frankenstein’s IWD Mix
Anne is one of our favourite DJ’s here at Music For Modern Living. Not only is she a DJ with impeccable taste. She is also the singer with The Gene Dudley Group and a regular contributer on UK radio station Jazz FM.
Here Anne presents a one hour mix packed full of female empowered soul & funk in honour of International Women’s Day, featuring tracks for and about strong women, and some of her favourite female-led covers of popular tracks.
Catch Anne’s regular show on Jazz FM every weekend afternoon from 2pm (GMT).
Gizelle Smith – International Women of Funk
Gizelle Smith is a singer from the UK and we’re huge fans. She first came to our attention back in 2009 when she collaborated on an album with The Mighty Mocambos. She’s just about to release her latest long player for Jalapeno Records (Due out on 30 March). To say we’re excited is a bit of an understatement. You can pre-order the album from bandcamp now.
Gizelle put this Spotify Playlist together of her favourite women of funk.
Check out what Gizelle had to say about this playlist and the inspiration for it in this Facebook post.
Jalapeno Soul Sisters – Volume 2
Jalapeno Records are one of the best record labels in the Contemporary Funk and Soul World. They’ve put together this Spotify playlist as part of their Soul Sisters Series.
The mix celebrates many of the artists that have featured on the label including Gizelle Smith, Izo Fitxroy, Alexia Coley and Kylie Auldist.
Work Your Soul – March 2018
This one wasn’t actually released for IWD but it’s a great celebration of female sixties soul music.
Gail Smith the host of Work Your Soul recently DJ’d at a fundraiser in Melbourne for victims of domestic violence. As such, she packed her record box with 45’s featuring the best female vocalists and girl power tunes money can by. With not enough time to spin all of these great records at the gig. She decided to dedicate this months show to some of those tunes that she didn’t get to play.
Great timing and a fitting mix to celebrate International Women’s Day!
Melting Pot – Vol 167 (Celebrating IWD 2018)
Melting Pot is a fortnightly show hosted by Mr Boogie aka The Vinyl Junkie on Shoreditch Radio.
For this edition Mr Boogie pays humble homage to some of his favourite female artists, past and present, in celebration of International Women’s Day.
Artists include Ella Fitzgerald, La Lupe, Sharon Jones, Alice Russell, Bebel Gilberto, Tanika Charles and Nina Simone who opens and closes out proceedings.
