Gizelle Smith recently announced that her new album, Revealing will be released on 28 May 2021.
Daughter of Joe Smith, a band member of the legendry Motown group ‘The Four Tops’. It seems that Gizelle was always destined to be involved in music and she definitely followed in her fathers footsteps. Having put out two albums that really cemented her as one of the best in the Contemporary Soul and Funk music scene.
Gizelle started off her career back in 2009 as the lead singer of the Hamburg-based Soul/Funk band The Mighty Mocambos. Their album ‘This Is Gizelle Smith & The Mighty Mocambos‘ was a huge success. The first single from that album ‘Working Woman‘, was picked up by legendry DJ and Producer Kenny Dope. He remixed the track for his own Kay Dee record label and more than ten years on and ‘Working Woman – Kenny Dope Remixes‘ is still a big tune on the scene.
Next came second album, ‘Ruthless Day‘, released on UK label Jalapeno Records. Ruthless Day was still very much rooted in the funk music she had become known for while introducing some more jazzy and intricate arrangements. Singles ‘Dust‘ and ‘Stay‘ were again well received and popular tunes with DJ’s around the world.
That now brings us to the latest release, ‘Revealing‘. Not to be confined to the Soul and Funk music she has become so well known for. Gizelle is flexing her muscles, the music still has a basis in soul and funk but also takes in influences of pop, rock and electronica.
Gizelle’s father sadly passed away in 2019, this tragic event in Gizelle’s life inspired a creative reset.
“My whole identity as a song-writer and musician vanished into the ether with my dad, like a cord had been severed.”
Unable to focus on the material she had already been working on, she decided to start from scratch.
“because regardless of what was happening in my life, an album needed to be written.”
We got a teaser of the new material recently when the first single from the album was released digitally. A cover version of the Kate Bush song ‘King of the Mountain‘. To say it’s an amazing version probably doesn’t do it justice. On ‘King of the Mountain‘, Gizelle does what all good cover versions do. She takes the ethos of the original but gives it a totally new spin.
If this is anything to go by then we can’t wait to hear the rest of the new album.
‘Revealing‘ is due for release on 28 May 2021 on vinyl, cd and digital download. Pre-orders are open via Gizelle Smith’s Bandcamp page.
