After 54 years as a Radio DJ, Club DJ, Producer, Remixer, Writer and Curator. Dr Bob Jones has announced he is going into semi-retirement. Affectionately known to many as “The Good Doctor“, Bob has been at the forefront of Soul music since the late sixties.

I’ve been a fan of Dr Bob for many many years. I first remember really being aware of him through his Chillifunk Records label that he ran with Lofty and the mix cd he did for Trust The DJ way back in 2002. After being a fan for so long, it was with shock and disappointment that I learnt of his decision via Totally Wired Radio.

The Dr has decided to call time on his long running radio show “The Surgery with Dr Bob Jones” which has most latterly been broadcasting on Eddie Pillers radio station, Totally Wired Radio. There has been rumours floating around. But Bob confirmed on his radio show on 30th May that he would no longer be broadcasting “The Surgery” and in fact that was the very last show.

Whether it be the various incarnations of Soul, Jazz Funk, Afrobeat or House. There’s was always something new and interesting to hear on Dr Bob’s Surgery shows. So thankyou Bob for the music and enlightenment. Bob has some live DJ gigs planned over the rest of 2021 and going into 2022. Here’s hoping these gigs go ahead.

In a statement on Facebook Bob wrote:

“Hello Soul Family……..TAKES A MASSIVE DEEP BREATH………..! You’re probably wondering WHY I’ve decided to call it a day on my Surgery Radio Show? Well, not an easy decision, I decided to call it a day, in my head, at the beginning of this year 2021.The decision was very hard for me to accept and do as I’ve enjoyed being a fan & later a DJ, of Inspirational Black Music since growing in Chelmsford, Essex in the 60s. As many of you know I started spinning in my local pub The Red Beret, Chelmsford in 1967, and have continued DJ’ing ever since. As I said it’s not the easiest decisions I’ve ever made AND I’m not asking for any sympathy re this. But I’m feeling very tired both physically and mentally. On the plus side I have a few committed club gigs this year & next 2022, if they go ahead, Covid permitting. So that’s it really, I still enjoy my music and still searching, and as Gospel singers The New Voices Of Freedom once said ‘I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For’, so I’ll be looking for tunes until I’m off the planet!. Take care soul family AND THANKS AGAIN for your love & support for the last 54 years, stay safe & hopefully we’ll catch up over a beer or 3 at a forthcoming gig soon. BIG LOVE & SOUL Dr Bob J”

We will miss The Good Doctor on our airwaves. If you missed his last show on TWR you can listen back on Mixcloud below.
