It was with shock and sadness that we heard the anouncement last month that Gilles Peterson has had to take the decision to hit the pause button on Worldwide FM.
Setup six years ago, the station has hosted regular shows from some of the very best DJ’s and tastemakers from around the world. Including Ashley Beedle, Colleen ‘Cosmo’ Murphy, Toshio Matsuura, Crazy P, Colin Curtis, Francois K, DJ Paulette, Kirk Degiorgio, Nicola Conte, Mr Scruff, Rob Da Bank, Louie Vega, Bluey from Incognito and of course Gilles Peterson himself.
A leading light in the world of radio, and a breath of fresh air from the tosh that most of the commercial radio stations seem to churn out. Gilles said in a Facebook post that he will look for a solution over the coming year and in the meantime will continue to host radio shows. The Worldwide FM website will continue to exist and the entire archive will remain on their Mixcloud profile. That’s a heck of a lot of shows to get through!
In this tough financial climate, stations like Worldwide FM, Totally Wired Radio, The Face Radio and Blue in Green Radio need your support more than ever. If you can support these stations financially then check the links below. If you can’t make a donation then make sure you check the stations out and support your favourite shows by liking and sharing on social media.
Worldwide FM will stop broadcasting at the end of October. So many of the stations regular shows are having their last episodes. Make sure you tune in and support such a great station. We are hoping that Worldwide FM will return bigger and better in the not too distant future.
Amongst so many great shows some of our favourites have been:
Gilles Peterson – The 20
In this series Gilles select 20 of his favourite tracks from a paticular genre or movement. Covering NuJazz, Brit Funk, Post Punk, Dubstep, Drum n Bass, British Jazz, Triphop, Disco and many more.
Louie Vega – Open Air Sessions
Louie Vega, one half of the production duo Masters at Work presented his weekly Open Air Sessions and also Lock Down Sessions shows. The very best Soul, Funk, Disco, House and Boogie music from a true master.
Check out the Open Air Sessions here.
Bluey
Throughout 2020 Bluey from Incognito presented a series of shows for Worldwide FM. Each show centred on a theme. From drums, bass, saxophone, keyboards, music from film and televison, brazilian music, soulful house. The list goes on and on. Bluey not only has an impressive record collection but his knowledge of music is nothing short of encyclopedic.
